What inspired this design?

The Chrysanthemum flowers.

In the beginning, Chrysanthemum flowers were only yellow in colour and became known as the golden flower.

When a bunch of Chrysanthemum flowers were gifted to the Japanese emperor, he was so taken in by its beauty that he adopted it as the imperial seal. Even today, the Imperial seal of Japan is the Chrysanthemum flower and can be used only by the Emperor of Japan. The Japanese throne is known as the Chrysanthemum Throne.

Interestingly, the flowers originated in China. The cultivation of Chrysanthemum flowers in China dates back to 3000 years when the flower was used for medicinal purposes. It is one of the four most important flowers in Chinese culture. In ancient China, the ninth month in the Lunar calendar is the Chrysanthemum month.

The flower symbolises purity, happiness, nobility, success and longevity.
