This is a digital print of the original pen & ink painting.

The gazebo was inspired by the artist's travels in Reunion Island - a picturesque French outpost in the Indian Ocean.

Reunion Island is home to the now-dormant Piton des Neiges volcano. When the top of the Piton des Neiges collapsed three million years ago, it created three cirques or calderas shaped like an ace of clubs. The calderas are the Mafate cirque in the Northwest, Salazie in the Northeast and Cilaos in the South —each with distinct characteristics.

Salazie is a Heritage Site. Hell-Bourg in Salazie is the only village on Reunion Island, and it is beautifully frozen in time. In the 18th century, it was known as a spa town because of its hot springs. But in 1948, a cyclone blocked the source of its hot springs. Hell-Bourg today is picture-postcard perfect with its centuries-old Creole homes, architecture and culture. Most Creole homes have beautiful gardens. And in olden days there'd be a gazebo in these gardens where the girls of the house were allowed to meet eligible bachelors, who wished to court them, over a cup of tea. The gazebos offered the youngsters a wee bit of privacy but still under the watchful eyes of the elders of the house. You can still find these gazebos in old Creole homes in Hell—Bourg standing beautifully in a time warp.
